Healing takes time
1 Cleaning Your Piercing
Use NeilMed Piercing Aftercare spray — This is the sterile saline solution we recommend for all piercings. Available through our shop or Bryt's affiliate links. Avoid homemade salt solutions.
Clean three times daily — Spray NeilMed onto a clean Q-tip, then gently dab the piercing front and back. Use a dry Q-tip to dry the area. Morning, noon, and night.
In the shower — Rinse your piercing at the end of your shower with warm water. This helps soften and remove any crusties. Don't pick at them!
Pro tip: Don't over-clean! Three times a day is plenty. Over-cleaning can irritate the piercing and slow healing.
2 What to Avoid
❌ Do not touch
Don't disturb while healing
❌ Rotating or twisting jewelry
This damages healing tissue
❌ Alcohol, peroxide, ointments
These harm healthy tissue
❌ Do not submerge in water
Pools, hot tubs, baths, lakes
❌ Sleeping on the piercing
Use a travel pillow if needed
❌ Changing jewelry too soon
Wait until fully healed
3 Healing Times
Healing times vary significantly based on piercing type, placement, your body, and how well you follow aftercare. These are typical ranges — your experience may differ:
* These are estimates only. Always consult with me before changing jewelry or assuming your piercing is fully healed. Oral and surface piercings have their own care routines — check out the sections below!
4 What's Normal vs. What's Not
✓ Often Normal During Healing
- • Mild redness around the piercing
- • Light swelling
- • Clear or slightly white discharge
- • Crusties forming around jewelry
- • Occasional itching
- • Tenderness when bumped
- • Irritation bumps
✗ Contact Me If You See
- • Increasing pain

5 Oral Piercing Care
Tongue, lip, and other oral piercings need a little extra attention since your mouth is a busy place! The good news is that oral piercings often heal relatively quickly with proper care.
The First 6-8 Weeks
During the initial healing period, you'll follow a special oral care routine. After 6-8 weeks, you can transition to normal piercing aftercare — just keep up with good oral hygiene!
Your Daily Oral Piercing Routine:
Keep Up Your Normal Oral Hygiene
Brush and floss at least twice a day, just like usual. Good oral health = happy piercing!
Rinse After Eating, Drinking, or Smoking
Every time you put something in your mouth that isn't water, rinse with alcohol-free, antiseptic mouthwash. This keeps bacteria from hanging out around your new piercing.
Ice Is Your Friend
For the first few days, let ice chips dissolve in your mouth to help with swelling. Cold water and popsicles work great too!
What to Avoid During Healing:
❌ Alcohol-based mouthwash
Too harsh — stick to alcohol-free
❌ Spicy or acidic foods
Can irritate the piercing
❌ Playing with the jewelry
Tempting, but resist!
❌ Oral contact / kissing
Wait until healed
Pro Tips:
- • Carry a small bottle of alcohol-free mouthwash with you
- • Stick to soft foods for the first few days
- • Take small bites and chew carefully
- • A new, soft-bristled toothbrush can help you be extra gentle
6 Surface Piercing Care
Good to Know
Surface piercings (like surface bars, dermal anchors, and anti-eyebrow piercings) heal a bit differently than traditional piercings. With some extra TLC, they can look amazing!
Unlike piercings that pass through a defined area of tissue, surface piercings sit just beneath the skin's surface. They're sometimes called "long-term temporary" because they may not last forever — but many people enjoy them for years with proper care!
What Makes Surface Piercings Unique:
⏱️ Longer Healing Journey
Usually 6-18 months — a little extra patience pays off
💎 Specialized Jewelry
Surface bars or anchors designed just for these placements
🛡️ Needs Extra Protection
A little more mindful care during healing
✨ Worth the Effort
Unique placements that make a statement
Tips for Happy Surface Piercings:
Stay consistent with cleaning — Use NeilMed or sterile saline spray regularly. Consistent, gentle cleaning helps these piercings thrive.
Be mindful of snagging — Take a little extra care with clothing, towels, and seatbelts. Being gentle with your piercing keeps it happy.
Give it space — Avoid sleeping directly on the piercing or wearing tight clothing over it. Less pressure = better healing.
Keep an eye on it — Check your piercing regularly. If anything looks different or feels off, just reach out and we'll take a look together.
Signs to Check In With Me:
Sometimes surface piercings can migrate (shift position) over time. It's not always a big deal, but let me know if you notice:
- • The bar looking more visible through the skin
- • The piercing holes seeming closer together
- • The jewelry sitting at a different angle
- • Ongoing irritation that doesn't settle down
These things happen sometimes — it's just your body's way of adjusting. We can chat about the best next steps!
